In Oregon, We Call It Sunrise Club

Sunrise over the Willamette River

There is an hour in Oregon that most people overlook, even though it’S one of the best.

It is early, so early the Pacific Northwest is still pretty dark outside. Even once the sun is officially "up" in the morning, there is no promise you will see it; Oregon will be Oregon. Everything is pretty quiet and the temptation to stay in bed and scroll is real. But here's an idea… what if you moved in another direction, slow enough to hear the almost imperceptible hum under the surface, and stepped outside.

Get to a spot (whether you’re at the Oregon Coast, in your neighborhood, or in rural Willamette Valley) where you can see the eastern sky over the Cascade Mountains as it begins to move from charcoal to rose to pale gold (it happens more days than you think). You’ll notice that the air might smell like damp bark, maybe cool moss, wet cement, or something blooming nearby. Take notice and appreciate that clean, crisp bite we're fortunate to experience in this beautiful state.

Can you feel it? The wild thing is that many people sleep straight through it. We call it Sunrise Club, and we live for it.

And here is the thing, you already know this feeling.

You have felt it on camping trips when you woke before everyone else and wandered down to the water. You have felt it on vacations in a new city you couldn't wait to explore. Maybe you felt it on a random Tuesday years ago when, for no particular reason, you left the house early and walked through a quiet neighborhood thinking, I should do this more often.

That small spark of curiosity is the shift, the willingness to try the morning on and see how it fits. Take your coffee with you if you prefer. Step outside before you’ve answered emails or opened social media. Notice what is happening and lean into what it's telling you.

And here’s the real magic; in Oregon, there is never a shortage of places to stand in the presence of something beautiful. A backyard works, a trailhead works, a sidewalk works. It starts, not with a trip or a plan, but with the sunrise.

Most of us insist we are not morning people, but maybe we have simply never given the morning an actual chance. You don’t have to be a morning person, just a person who shows up for one sunrise, start there curious human, you’ve got this.

Need some inspo? Here are a few of our favorite sunrise moments from the last several months.
